He is BAYC #5679, from a digital art project launched in 2021 by Yuga Labs, LLC called the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).
A brief history of all this stuff:
The initial launch, called a 'drop' in the digital art world, was comprised of 10,000 images of Bored Apes, each with different combinations of traits such as clothing, facial expressions, accessories, fur and background colors, etc.
Called a generative art project, all 10,000 BAYC images sold out almost immediately. It became wildly popular and prestigious to own one. Owning one of these images (also called an asset) became a Thing.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club has since become an internationally recognized brand that gets more widely known every day.
Think early Disney. In 1950 who had ever heard of Mickey Mouse? But in 2024, who hasn't heard of Mickey Mouse?
Many in the Digital Art community believe that these images are already on their way to becoming one of the top brands of the 21st century.

DOGGOS:
Several months after the Bored Apes were originally dropped (which means displayed and sold online via a digital marketplace, similar to a traditional art gallery in real life displaying and putting paintings up for sale), an extraordinary event took place.
The Founders of Yuga Labs - a wildly witty group of friends - decided that the Bored Apes were lonely, and needed pets. Dogs, to be exact.
So they created a new Collection of 10,000 dog images - one to correspond with every one of the original 10,000 Apes - and called it the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC). They gave these for free to every Ape owner, and sent them to their digital wallets, which is called an 'airdrop.'
They became known fondly as the 'Doggos.'
The Doggos were a great hit. Thus, the original Ape was the gift that kept on giving.
We own BAYC #5679, so we received his doggo, BAKC #5679. Like the Apes, all the doggos, had different traits. Ours wears camo boots and blows bubbles. Isn't he a cutie pie?
But wait! There's more!...
MUTANTS!:
Fasten your seat belts for this one!
Shortly after the Doggo drop, Yuga went wild yet again, and airdropped for free to all holders of BAYC NFTs yet another image.
This time, it was of bubbling green Serum in chemist's vials.
Owners were given the option to keep their serum, or to 'burn' it, which meant send it to a digital wallet address where it would become something else.
But what???
If you burned your Serum, it would become... a Mutant.
A really dope, sick, hilariously gross version of your original Ape.
So you got the Mutant, PLUS kept your original Ape, which wasn't changed. The Serum was airdropped free to owners of the Bored Apes, so there were 10,000 vials.
Thus was borne the Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC).
However, this time, Yuga created 10,000 extra Mutants so that folks who didn't own a Bored Ape could 'ape in' to the community by buying a Mutant and become part of the family - the Club - which was interconnected via social media from all corners of the earth.

COOL STORY, BUT HOW AND WHY IS THE BORED APE BRAND BECOMING WIDELY KNOWN?

One of the HUGE perks of owning BAYC assets, is that Intellectual Property rights (IP) were granted by Yuga Labs to owners who wanted to start businesses using their assets as their business identity. Think mascot.
WHAT IS A MADE BY APES (MBA) LICENSE?
Hundreds of Bored Ape and Mutant Ape owners began businesses using their IP rights.
So many, in fact, that Yuga created the Made by Apes (MBA) License to verify authenticity.
WHAT IS THE MADE BY APES BODEGA?
Yuga then made the Bodega, a compendium of all the licensed Made by Apes businesses, so that anyone can look up and check the authenticity of a business.
Every legitimate Made by Apes authenticated business is listed in the Bodega.
